Granicus - Granicus [1973]

When this album came out. Record Labels thought that the public just "wasn't ready" for this band. They were labeled "Too Dangerous". Sometimes they sound a bit like Zeppelin. But I don't hold that against them. The only drag is that they made only record and here it is.

Tracklist:

1-You're In America
2-Bad Talk
3-Twilight
4-Prayer
5-Cleveland Ohio
6-Nightmare
7-When You're Movin

Witchcraft - Self Titled [2004]

A Swedish retro-doom-psych-folk bandstarted in 2000 by vocalist/guitarist Magnus Pelander, John Hoyles (guitar) and brothers Ola (bass) and Jens Henriksson (drums). Their debut album, Witchcraft, recorded in a basement studio outfitted exclusively with vintage equipment. The album captured a hauntingly authentic 1970s sound — steeped not only in the heavy-handed work of Black Sabbath and Pentagram, but also in the psych and folk-rock elements of obscure acts like Leaf Hound, Captain Beyond, and Comus. And yet, ironically, none of the members of Witchcraft were even born before 1977, making their loving reconstruction of that decade's music — underground music at that — all the more remarkable.

Tracklisting:

1. "Witchcraft" – 6:00
2. "The Snake" – 2:48
3. "Please Don't Forget Me" (Liebling) – 2:13
4. "Lady Winter" – 2:58
5. "What I Am" – 3:45
6. "Schyssta Lögner" – 1:57
7. "No Angel or Demon" – 3:28
8. "I Want You to Know" – 3:16
9. "It's So Easy" – 3:53
10. "You Bury Your Head" – 4:40
11. "Her Sisters They Were Weak" – 6:00

Dozer - Beyond Colossal [2008]

Hailing from Sweden, Dozer sound like if Union Carbide Productions worshipped Pentagram and early Alice Cooper instead of The Stooges and MC5. In reading some other reviews of this album I was surprised to see the band compared to Clutch, Fu Manchu and Kyuss. There’s definite similarities with those bands, but Dozer has a much darker and original sound. Maybe their past records are more generic, but Beyond Colossal offers a refreshing change of pace from the usual 3rd rate Black Sabbath rip offs usually found in the derivative “stoner rock” genre.

Five albums in and Dozer shows no sign of slowing down. I don't think this is the greatest album in their discography (that may forever be In the Tail of a Comet), but it's certainly consistently good from start to finish. Recommended.

  1. The Flood
  2. Exoskeleton (Part II)
  3. Empire's End
  4. The Ventriloquist
  5. Grand Inquisitor
  6. Message Through the Horses
  7. The Throne
  8. Fire for Crows
  9. Two Coins for Eyes
  10. Bound for Greatness

Lions - No Generation [2008]

This has been one of my most listened to albums since I came across it earlier this year. Austin, TX has continued to be a hot bed for awesome tunes with bands like Lions and Amplified Heat carrying the torch. I'd venture to label these dudes as the closest kin to MC5 in the 2000's generation. But then again these dudes ain't got no generation.....

Don't ask no fuckin' questions. Just get the damn thing.

DEAD MAN'S HAND - Volume 2

Compound Radio became an addiction for me when it started. I couldn't NOT listen. Fuckin' Lazie and the lunchtime 'Tuck" sessions. The music was good. Bad Brains and DEVO every day. I somehow became part of the 'crew', 600 miles away from that kitchen, via emails and song requests over IM and emails. These dudes knew what was up and I had never even met them face to face. Something was happening and it was big. We thought so, anyhow. Fuck you. We're here. Come and get us. That was what we were saying. I heard about cease and decist orders and various other troubles. Lazie told me to quit making requests, and make a goddamn show. I tried to fit my piece of the puzzle into the Compound. A high order. My roommate and music collector/affecianado Gregg Emley held down half of the musical choices and gave a damn. The show ended up being called "Dead Man's Hand", obviously lifted from a Motorhead lyric. What else? I was damn close to calling my show "Gimme Danger" but it was voted out. I told my man Junebug Spade in Detroit, he should use that name, being a bad motherfucker from Detroit and all. He took it and ran with another great running weekly show on Compound. We both started emailing our shows in, so Lazie could have a break once in awhile. I made 12 episodes. Volume 1 was only 1 hour, so I started here with Volume 2. Enjoy. Light one up and listen hard. Keep an eye out for further shows and further commentary from San Jose.

Monster Magnet - Tab....25 (1991)

Easily the most bizarre, and consequently least "accessible" release in the mighty MONSTER MAGNET's discography, Tab...25 is also one of the most interesting. Open-minded students of rock will hear elements of not only HAWKWIND and SABBATH, but also a distinct BUTTHOLE SURFERS psychedelic influence. The title track alone went on to inspire bands across the globe, from ASTROSONIQ to UFOMAMMUT, and even the great KYUSS (back in '91, MM sounded more like KYUSS than KYUSS did!). Listen in an open and elevated state of mind, and you're in for a rock & roll experience like no other. If that doesn't work then just get really fucking high!

Greenleaf - Secret Alphabets (2003)

Greenleaf is a Swedish band created, as a sideproject, in late 1999/early 2000 by Tommi Holappa (Dozer), Daniel Lidén (Demon Cleaner) and Bengt Bäcke (record producer/studio engineer, Dozer, Demon Cleaner, Lowrider). In 2003 Daniel joined Dozer, making 3 of the 4 Dozers members also members of Greenleaf so the band took a back seat till 2007. Get this record is some seriously heavy stoner shit. Play Loud!
